He Built an Empire on Fear. The Woman Who Saved Him Was Hiding the One Secret That Could Destroy Them Both.

Julian fired twice behind them before forcing Elena into an underground tunnel beneath the estate.

They ran through darkness together.

Finally, deep beneath the mansion, they stopped inside a concrete safe room lit by emergency lights.

Elena bent forward breathing hard.

Julian grabbed her shoulders.

“Are you hurt?”

But Julian suddenly froze.

His eyes dropped to the silver necklace hanging against her chest.

Everything changed in his face.

Shock.

Disbelief.

Fear.

Slowly, he lifted the pendant between his fingers.

“Where did you get this?”

Elena swallowed hard.

“My mother gave it to me before she died.”

Julian looked pale.

“That necklace belonged to my sister.”

The room went silent.

Elena stared at him.

“She disappeared twenty-six years ago,” Julian whispered.

“She was pregnant.”

The blood drained from Elena’s face.

Julian stepped backward slowly, horror growing in his eyes as realization settled between them.

“What was your mother’s name?”

Elena’s lips trembled.

“Catherine Cross.”

Julian looked like someone had shot him.

Because Elena Walker wasn’t a stranger.

She was his niece.

And neither of them had known.

At that exact moment, the steel safe-room door exploded inward.

Grant Mercer entered smiling with a shotgun in his hands.

“Well,” he said softly, “this just became interesting.”

PART 5 — THE TRUTH BURIED IN BLOOD

Grant Mercer laughed while smoke drifted through the ruined doorway behind him.

“You really never figured it out?” he asked Julian.

“All these years?”

Julian stepped protectively in front of Elena.

Mercer raised the shotgun.

“Your sister ran because she found out what The Circle planned to do to your family.”

Elena’s pulse thundered painfully.

“What are you talking about?” she whispered.

Mercer’s smile widened.

“Julian Cross was never supposed to become powerful.”

“The Circle needed obedience, not ambition.”

“So they arranged a little tragedy.”

He tilted his head casually.

“Your father’s arrest.”

“Your sister’s disappearance.”

“Your mother’s death.”

“All carefully organized.”

Julian’s hands curled into fists.

“You’re lying.”

“Am I?”

Mercer reached into his pocket and tossed a photograph onto the floor.

Julian picked it up slowly.

Elena looked over his shoulder—

And nearly collapsed.

The photograph showed a younger Julian standing beside several powerful politicians.

Including the governor.

Including the police commissioner.

And standing directly behind them…

Elena’s mother.

Alive.

Smiling.

Mercer’s voice turned cold.

“Catherine wasn’t running from The Circle.”

“She worked for them.”

“No,” Elena whispered.

“She was assigned to watch you, Julian.”

“Then she fell in love with the wrong man and disappeared before The Circle could clean up the mess.”

Julian’s breathing became uneven.

Mercer smiled cruelly.

“Your sister betrayed you long before you ever betrayed anyone else.”

For several seconds, nobody moved.
