For one second, nobody moved.
Then Vincent laughed softly despite the blood spreading across his chest.
“You still don’t understand, Adrien,” he whispered.
Adrien’s expression hardened.
“Understand what?”
Vincent looked directly at Emily.
“Ask him why your brother was really killed.”
Emily turned slowly toward Adrien.
The silence became unbearable.
Finally, Adrien lowered his weapon.
“Ben wasn’t innocent,” he admitted quietly.
Emily stared at him in shock.
“What?”
Adrien’s eyes filled with guilt.
“Your brother worked undercover for the FBI.”
The world seemed to stop.
Adrien continued painfully.
“He got close to Vincent while investigating trafficking operations.”
“But then he discovered something worse.”
Emily’s hands trembled violently.
“What was worse?”
Adrien swallowed hard.
“Your brother learned that the FBI itself was protecting Vincent.”
Emily felt physically sick.
“Ben tried bringing evidence to me because he believed I could expose them both.”
Adrien looked shattered for the first time.
“But somebody inside the Bureau leaked his location before we could meet.”
Emily remembered the river.
The funeral.
Her mother crying herself to sleep.
And suddenly, everything made horrifying sense.
Vincent coughed blood while smiling weakly.
“You know the funniest part?” he whispered.
“The agent who betrayed Ben… was family.”
Vincent laughed again.
“Your father.”
Emily stopped breathing.
“No…”
Adrien looked stunned himself.
Vincent nodded slowly.
“Old Robert Rivers sold information for years.”
“Your brother found out.”
“That’s why he had to die.”
Emily’s vision blurred.
Her father—the quiet Vietnam veteran who taught her to ride a bicycle, cried at Ben’s funeral, and hugged her while promising they would find justice—had betrayed his own son.
“No,” Emily whispered again.
Vincent grinned through bloodstained teeth.
“He chose money over family.”
Adrien suddenly stepped forward and fired once more.
Vincent collapsed dead.
Silence consumed the room.
Emily stood frozen.
Adrien approached carefully.
“Emily…”
She stepped backward.
“All these years…” she whispered.
“My father knew.”
Adrien nodded grimly.
“He disappeared six months ago.”
Emily slowly looked down at the recorder in her hands.
Then realization hit her like lightning.
Her father had vanished shortly after Ben’s death.
Not hiding.
Running.
Because somewhere out there, Robert Rivers knew the truth.
And if he was still alive…
He was the final man who could destroy everything.
Including the FBI itself.
Adrien stared at Emily carefully.
“What are you going to do?”
Emily wiped tears from her face.
Then, for the first time since entering the diner, her fear disappeared completely.
She looked Adrien Moretti directly in the eyes.
And smiled.
“Find my father.”
Then the warehouse lights suddenly went black.
A single sniper shot shattered the window beside them.
And somewhere in the darkness, a familiar older man’s voice echoed softly:
“You should’ve let the past stay buried.”
