Mason pulled his arm free and stared at her.
My father shouted for hotel security.

I called.
Arthur Reed answered.
His voice was thin at first, unused to being trusted.
We met three days later in a private reading room at the New York Public Library.
He arrived with that black cane and a manila folder tied with string.
“You look like her,” he said when he saw me.
“Like who?”
His face closed.
“Someone Margaret loved.”
He explained the clause slowly, as if placing knives on a table one by one.

Then I blocked her.

At eleven, my father called from a number I did not recognize.
I answered because old training dies more slowly than love.
